How to make your code more readable?
Do you name variables too casually or write code without taking into consideration the thoughts of reviewers?
This article explains how to make your code readable with examples in several chapters.
All of us are aware that code should be readable but have you considered what specific advantages readable codes have?
The code is then easily understandable and can be reviewed.
Even if you develop your app on your own, the reviewer may be you after a year.
Here are some advantages of writing readable code:
Let's look at how and what you can do to make your code more readable.
The name of a variable should include information about its value. The name of a value cannot just be anything related to it, and there are a few tips to help.
It is best to choose specific words by thinking of WHAT, WHERE, and sometimes HOW when defining variables.
ex:
In a small application, this may be okay, but for large applications, there may be several scenes where files must be retrieved.
As the reader knows what the function does, and the returned values are clearer, this is easier to read.
ex:
Having specific information about a variable in the name makes it easier to understand what it does.
There's no use in names like tmp and val, which mean almost nothing and don't allow reviewers to track what it contains.
This example doesn't include much information in val, so you have to keep your eye on what goes into the value of val every time you run it.
In this case, a specific name such as sumScore would be more appropriate than using val to tmp:
For short-term storage, tmp or val can be used. For example, swapping allows the use of tmp and val.
Since tmp is only used in three lines in the function, this is fine.
It is important to determine the variable length based on the purpose.
You should use a short name for a short scope, such as 5 lines so that you can easily verify what the variable does.
The variable should also be titled according to the necessary information if it is used in a vast scope so it can be understood anywhere and anytime.
In the example above, amountOfFoodPersonCanEat is short-lived and used once.
In that case, a shorter name is totally fine.
For this short piece of scope code, the variable name amount is sufficient.
But if you need to use it in other functions or keep using it, you might want to change to amountOfFoodPersonCanEat.
It is important to think about whether a name can be misinterpreted by others.
It might be better to use filteredArray or filteredObj for filtered arrays or objects.
As I mentioned earlier, this is fine for short-lived variables.
Nevertheless, it may be misunderstood as to whether filteredArray refers to a selected array or deleted array.
It is, therefore, better to use selectedArray when you want to select out an array from a variable.
The term "removedArray" should also mean an array that has been removed.
Similarly to filtered..., all the words may be misunderstood, so slicedResultArr or excludedArr may be a better option.
Putting max_ or min_ in front of what is restricted is a reliable way of indicating limits
In the preceding example, it becomes more difficult to determine whether limitNum is for a minimum or maximum value..
You just need to add min or max as a prefix.
You now understand what the variables are, and the code is simple and straightforward.
For boolean variables, use words such as is and has.
This is really a basic rule, but allow me to explain it briefly.
In general, at least in English, for a question that begins with “Is This?”, as well as “Do you...?”, you respond with a 'Yes/No'.
In this manner, boolean variables should be queried as is, can, or has (has is common instead of do).
ex:
Instead, you should use keywords to quickly identify 'Yes/No.'

How to make your code more readable?
Do you name variables too casually or write code without taking into consideration the thoughts of reviewers?
This article explains how to make your code readable with examples in several chapters.
All of us are aware that code should be readable but have you considered what specific advantages readable codes have?
The code is then easily understandable and can be reviewed.
Even if you develop your app on your own, the reviewer may be you after a year.
Here are some advantages of writing readable code:
Let's look at how and what you can do to make your code more readable.
The name of a variable should include information about its value. The name of a value cannot just be anything related to it, and there are a few tips to help.
It is best to choose specific words by thinking of WHAT, WHERE, and sometimes HOW when defining variables.
ex:
In a small application, this may be okay, but for large applications, there may be several scenes where files must be retrieved.
As the reader knows what the function does, and the returned values are clearer, this is easier to read.
ex:
Having specific information about a variable in the name makes it easier to understand what it does.
There's no use in names like tmp and val, which mean almost nothing and don't allow reviewers to track what it contains.
This example doesn't include much information in val, so you have to keep your eye on what goes into the value of val every time you run it.
In this case, a specific name such as sumScore would be more appropriate than using val to tmp:
For short-term storage, tmp or val can be used. For example, swapping allows the use of tmp and val.
Since tmp is only used in three lines in the function, this is fine.
It is important to determine the variable length based on the purpose.
You should use a short name for a short scope, such as 5 lines so that you can easily verify what the variable does.
The variable should also be titled according to the necessary information if it is used in a vast scope so it can be understood anywhere and anytime.
In the example above, amountOfFoodPersonCanEat is short-lived and used once.
In that case, a shorter name is totally fine.
For this short piece of scope code, the variable name amount is sufficient.
But if you need to use it in other functions or keep using it, you might want to change to amountOfFoodPersonCanEat.
It is important to think about whether a name can be misinterpreted by others.
It might be better to use filteredArray or filteredObj for filtered arrays or objects.
As I mentioned earlier, this is fine for short-lived variables.
Nevertheless, it may be misunderstood as to whether filteredArray refers to a selected array or deleted array.
It is, therefore, better to use selectedArray when you want to select out an array from a variable.
The term "removedArray" should also mean an array that has been removed.
Similarly to filtered..., all the words may be misunderstood, so slicedResultArr or excludedArr may be a better option.
Putting max_ or min_ in front of what is restricted is a reliable way of indicating limits
In the preceding example, it becomes more difficult to determine whether limitNum is for a minimum or maximum value..
You just need to add min or max as a prefix.
You now understand what the variables are, and the code is simple and straightforward.
For boolean variables, use words such as is and has.
This is really a basic rule, but allow me to explain it briefly.
In general, at least in English, for a question that begins with “Is This?”, as well as “Do you...?”, you respond with a 'Yes/No'.
In this manner, boolean variables should be queried as is, can, or has (has is common instead of do).
ex:
Instead, you should use keywords to quickly identify 'Yes/No.'
