You don't have to follow any conventions; everyone has their own.

When it comes to languages like JavaScript, where source code size is essential, whitespace can often add a few extra kilobytes to your files.
Maintain as much whitespace as possible while developing so the code can be read. Lastly, you can use a program that will go through the code and remove all the whitespace just before uploading.

When you write clean code, you produce a program that's easy to write, read, and maintain.
You may be tempted to consider your job done when a program works as expected, but that's not how it works.
To write clean code, we have to realize that our audience is not merely a computer they are real-life humans!

Here are some good reasons to keep your code clean:
Technical debt can be helpful when properly understood in context, but excessive technical debt is depressing.
Ignoring or writing sloppy code will result in more technical debt.
Historically, you'll have less time to fix it later.
So why not do it right from the start?
You'll likely gain more job satisfaction from the quality of your work than from the quantity.

Writing clean code is based on three core principles:

It is so tempting to simply rewrite a program rather than read, comprehend, and analyze the existing code.
It can be challenging to read, so if you write code you are barely able to understand as you write it, you will later be unable to comprehend it all.
